Mental and Emotional Aspects of the Lungs

mental aspects of lungs - chinese medicine acupuncture

As an acupuncturist, I am constantly assessing. Before my patients answer a single question, I am taking in cues as to what types of imbalances might be going on. In five-element acupuncture, the five major organ systems are the kidney, liver, lung, heart and spleen. When any of these systems are out of balance, certain physical, mental and emotional issues can manifest. Even if you aren’t experiencing a specific health issue, however, you will likely display particular personality traits that fall within these five organ systems. In the five-element world, the lungs are connected to the element of metal. continue reading »

FYI: Acupuncture Point “Happy Calm”

By Bradley Stiles, L.Ac.

Liver 3 – What it can do for you?

Liver 3, appropriately named “Happy Calm,” can be used to help treat insomnia, PMS, to move qi, ease irritability, relieve headache pain, treat eye problems and more.

This acupuncture point was used in a study where, after needling the spot, researchers watched the brain using an MRI to see if and how it responded to the acupuncture.

Investigators compared two acupuncture points on the foot, Liver 3 and Stomach 44 with a nearby
sham acupuncture point and found that both Liver 3 and Stomach 44 consistently elicited specific brain responses.

When Liver 3 was stimulated, it activated the visual cortex and other areas of the brain that affect the central nervous system.  In Chinese medicine this makes perfect sense because the liver meridian is in charge of vision.

How Acupuncture Affects Willpower

By Bradley Stiles, L.Ac.

Can acupuncture increase your willpower?

According to the National Library of Medicine it can!  In a study that was conducted using electro-stim at acupuncture point ST 36 acupuncture was shown to stimulate the vagal nerve supporting the bodies ability to produce dopamine.

Dopamine is responsible for your reward response in your brain.  Too much dopamine and your aggressive, euphoric, or can cause intense sexual feelings.  Not enough dopamine causes you to be at higher risk for Alzheimers, Parkinsons, depression, bipolar disorder, binge eating, addiction, gambling, and schizophrenia.

Acupuncture has also been shown in other scientific studies to regulate dopamine release if there is an excess of dopamine, so it creates a nice balance of dopamine in the body and can result in a reduction of negative symptoms.

Five Reasons Acupuncture Helps Reduce Stress

Stress is a word many people are familiar with. The dictionary defines stress in multiple ways, but there is only one that matters when we discuss how stress affects our physical bodies. The definition is this, “stress is a physical, chemical or emotional factor that causes bodily or mental tension.” And while most people think of stress as being detrimental, it truly does have a function in our bodies. Stress is the body’s way of signaling for help or a break in the routine. If we don’t listen to these signals, we can develop imbalances in our bodies, which can then lead to illnesses. continue reading »
